Designing a Stage for Conversation

A More Intimate Setting
The stage was designed to feel less like a traditional conference setup and more like an inviting living room. Inspired by the warmth and ease of conversational sets such as The Drew Barrymore Show, the arrangement brought speakers into a closer, more natural relationship with one another—and with the audience.
A residential-style sofa, lounge chairs, coffee table, and layered area rug created a grounded setting that felt polished without becoming formal.

Warmth, Texture, and Flexibility
Every furnishing was selected with both appearance and performance in mind. The charcoal sofa provided a versatile foundation, while burnt-orange velvet chairs and richly textured pillows offered a warm complement to ILEA’s signature purple. Upholstery, soft textiles, and the area rug added depth on camera while helping soften the environment around live microphones. Because the program called for several panel configurations, the seating could also be rearranged easily without disrupting the overall composition.

A Collected Point of View
The arched bookcase gave the stage a distinctive architectural focal point and an opportunity to introduce personality at a more intimate scale. Books, greenery, artwork, and sculptural objects were layered to create the character of a thoughtfully collected home, with subtle references to Chicago woven throughout.
Some details may have revealed themselves only on closer look, but that sense of discovery was intentional. It is often the smallest elements that make a space feel considered—and the ones clients remember most.
